Since I'm not sure if anyone reads my other blog yet, do any of you have experience training while breastfeeding? So far, we're doing ok, but I want to make sure I don't lose my milk...any suggestions?
I get nutrition consults on the mother/baby unit for "nutrition and breastfeeding" every once in awhile, so here is what I tell them. Until baby is 6 months old, you need an additional 330 calories, and after 6 months you need 400 calories per day. If you are working out hard, you will want to be sure to get those extra calories. Also, Be sure to get enough fluid. The recommended amount for a young, active adult is about 35 cal/kg body wt. The most important way to increase milk supply is to nurse more often. Since milk supply is base on demand, if you feel a lack in milk volume, add in a few extra feedings for a few days and the extra stimulation will help to increase milk supply. You may have already known all that, but if not, hope that helps.
I have worried about losing too much weight and keeping my milk and working out and keeping it too. There is this herbal medicine called fenugreek that my nurse and sisters recommend if your milk is low. It fills you right up. I only took it in the beggining for my milk to come in when Ava had to have a bottle in the hospital due to her jaundice. It worked great though. If you eat lots to make up for the calorie loss and drink tons I am sure you will be fine.
I am not sure because i ddnt breastfeed..couldn't but I am inspired by you and Lindsey! I am going o the pool to do more waer excerses ad see a doctor to seeif i should tr running now? I hope so Sionce the accident i haven't walked fst or ran..so my goal is to run by the sumer! Thanks for he inspiration!
i am so impressed with you carly!! i hate running (and exercise for that matter) so i can't help you but i do think you are awesome! have fun training :)
I was told by a couple doctors and breastfeeding consultants that eating an avacado or two a day really helps with milk production. And it worked, whenever I felt like I wasn't producing as much as I should I'd eat a couple and it came back. They say that the natural fatty acids in it are great for you when nursing. Good luck!
